About Our Society
Overview
The University of St Andrews Catholic Society is open to all students, faculty, and staff within the university. Full membership to the society costs £5 (£3 during Fresher's Week). Membership gives you a price reduction for specific events and allows you to vote in society meetings. It also enables you to access discounts from our generous sponsors, I.J. Mellis Cheesemongers and the St Andrews Wine Company.
Canmore
The Catholic Society has very close ties with both the Catholic Chaplaincy and the local Catholic Church, St. James. The majority of its events are hosted at Canmore, located at 24 The Scores.
The Canmore Chaplaincy building, a three story townhouse which sits adjacent to St. James' Catholic Church, was purchased for the students of the university in 1964 through the generosity of the late Mrs. Betty Stevens and her late husband, Dr. C.P. Stevens.
Canmore consists of a common room, a cloakroom, a lounge, two kitchens, two bathrooms, the Chaplain's Room, a library, and St. Margaret's Chapel, where the Blessed Sacrament awaits any student who wishes to encounter our Eucharistic Lord.
Our Community
The chaplaincy is open to all staff and students at the university and is under the pastoral care of the archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh. Our society is led by students and aims to promote the Catholic faith throughout the University and provide a social setting for Catholics and non-Catholics alike.
We attempt to achieve the first aim by inviting speakers to give talks on topics related to Catholicism. These talks are free to attend and are open to all who wish to listen. Past speakers have included Fr. Timothy Radcliffe OP, Fr. Christopher Jamison OSB, Bishop Hugh Gilbert OSB, and Archbishop Leo Cushley, in addition to other less famous but equally insightful guests.
To achieve our second aim, we work closely with the Catholic chaplaincy to create a community where everyone is welcomed and valued. We host weekly Sunday Suppers, as well as a variety of other social events.
